James Nott is the Head of Projects & Programme Management at Nuclear Transport Solutions (NTS), where he leads the Project and Programme Management Function. He oversees a team of skilled project, programme, and project controls professionals responsible for delivering major initiatives across NTS’s Shipping, Rail, and Solutions divisions. James’s role ensures that projects align with strategic goals and are executed with precision.

“If you’ve worked in a regulated industry like financial services, utilities, or healthcare, transitioning to nuclear is much easier,” says James.

“I was in manufacturing when I discovered the vast opportunities within the nuclear sector. With successive governments recognising its value, the career prospects are both secure and rewarding,” shares James.

“The nuclear sector is incredibly diverse, ranging from decommissioning to defence, encompassing a variety of professions. Everyone works at the leading edge of their disciplines, fostering a real sense of collaboration,” James explains.

“I’ve gained expertise in radiological safety cases, construction, rail, shipping, and transport solutions. My career in nuclear has been incredibly adaptable,” James shares.

When asked to describe the nuclear sector in three words, James said: “Scale, Community, Security.” These words reflect the vast scope of the industry, the strong sense of belonging among its professionals, and the long-term stability it offers.

“There are so many sub-sectors within nuclear; explore them to find the right fit for your career aspirations. For example, if you want to manage a programme from design to completion, look at Sellafield or Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). If you want to grow your expertise in construction, asset management, or infrastructure, there are plenty of opportunities available,” James advises.
