Background
Dominic Westcott is a Nuclear Safety Engineer and Reactor Physicist at Heysham 1 Power Station. A recent graduate of the University of Manchester, Dominic’s journey into the nuclear sector was driven by his passion for sustainable energy and his desire to contribute to a low-carbon future. “Working in nuclear wasn’t something I envisioned during my school years,” Dominic admits, “but now I can’t imagine being anywhere else.”
Since joining the Nuclear Safety Group, Dominic has become an integral part of the team, specialising in reactor physics, nuclear safety case work, and acting as a Regulatory Interface—a role that sees him liaising with the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR).
How Did Dominic Enter the Nuclear Sector?
Dominic’s interest in energy sustainability took root during his A-levels, where he completed an Extended Project focused on the potential of nuclear as a low-carbon solution to global energy challenges. “I was fascinated by how nuclear could address energy needs sustainably,” he recalls.
This academic curiosity led him to EDF’s Science and Engineering placement scheme during his university studies. Despite initial doubts about his chances, Dominic was accepted into the year-long program. His time with EDF’s Nuclear Safety team proved transformative, solidifying his interest in the sector and earning him a permanent position upon graduation. “That placement was the turning point,” Dominic reflects. “It gave me hands-on experience and confirmed that this was the career path for me.”
Expectations vs. Reality
Dominic admits his understanding of the nuclear sector was limited when he first started. “Like many, my view of nuclear was shaped by pop culture—think The Simpsons—so I didn’t know what to expect,” he said.
The reality far surpassed his expectations. “Seeing the scale of the reactor building and the complexity of the operations was awe-inspiring. The first time I stepped on-site, I was blown away by the intricacy of the plant and the expertise of the team.” This initial experience fuelled his passion for the sector and cemented his commitment to a career in nuclear.
Career Path and Key Milestones
Dominic’s career has been marked by steady growth and significant achievements. Following his placement year, he joined the Nuclear Safety Group full-time, where he honed his skills in reactor physics and safety case development.
One of Dominic’s standout responsibilities is his role as Regulatory Interface, where he coordinates between the site and ONR inspectors. “It’s a unique role that has given me incredible insight into how we maintain safety and compliance at a nuclear station,” he explains. His efforts have earned him praise from both colleagues and regulators, particularly for his work on achieving ‘Green’ rated inspections.
Additionally, Dominic is training to become an Emergency Reactor Physicist, a role critical to the safety of the plant during emergencies. “It’s challenging, but knowing the importance of what we do keeps me motivated,” he says.
Most Rewarding Aspects of the Role
Dominic finds immense satisfaction in knowing his work directly contributes to the safety and efficiency of Heysham 1. “The trust placed in me as Regulatory Interface is incredibly rewarding,” he shares. “Every successful inspection feels like a team victory.”
Beyond the technical achievements, Dominic values the sense of camaraderie at Heysham 1. “There’s a real community here,” he says. “We’re all working towards the same goal, and that shared purpose makes the job so much more fulfilling.”
Advice for Aspiring Nuclear Professionals
Dominic encourages anyone interested in energy or engineering to explore the nuclear sector. “With projects like Hinkley Point C and the development of Small Modular Reactors, there’s never been a more exciting time to join,” he asserts.
He emphasises the sector’s critical role in achieving net-zero targets, adding, “If you’re someone who loves solving complex problems and wants to make a positive environmental impact, this is the place to be.”
Encouraging Careers in Nuclear
Dominic believes more should be done to highlight the diverse opportunities within the nuclear sector. “Engaging with schools and universities is key,” he says. He also advocates for structured pathways from placements to permanent roles, citing his own seamless transition from intern to full-time employee as an example of best practice.
Reflecting on his journey, Dominic remains optimistic about the future of nuclear energy. “This sector is vital to the UK’s energy landscape,” he says. “I’m proud to be part of a field that’s making such a tangible difference.”
Looking Ahead
Dominic is excited about his future in nuclear. “Every day brings new challenges and opportunities to grow,” he shares. With a strong foundation of experience and a passion for sustainable energy, Dominic looks forward to continuing his career in a sector poised to play a pivotal role in meeting the UK’s energy needs for decades to come.
