Amy
Project ManagerBabcockIntroduction
Meet Amy, a Babcock Project Manager at the Clyde site, who worked in online creation before switching to a career in nuclear. “My role at Babcock has opened up a new way of thinking for me, where I'm able to focus on resolving higher level problems while supported by a technical team. Plus, it's a really interesting place to work – no two days are the same!”
A career in nuclear can start from anywhere
Before making the change, Amy worked in content creation producing ads for a digital media company, which could be considered a world away from work in the nuclear sector. After finding she was enjoying the project elements of the job more than the creative side, Amy was keen to explore the opportunities available to her in project management, which is when she found her place at Babcock.
“As someone interested in project work, the broad range of projects Babcock is involved in immediately appealed to me. I was lucky enough to get the chance to complete the Association of Project Management qualification, which was a strong selling point for transitioning into a new industry.”
A Smooth Transition
Having not worked in STEM previously, the transition into the nuclear industry may not have seemed like a totally natural one. However, the skills Amy developed when leading teams in her previous role were invaluable in making the change.
“My communication skills are something I draw on every day to ensure projects progress and all stakeholders are happy, as someone who transitioned to an unfamiliar industry, it's even more important that I communicate effectively with the people I work with.”
Conclusion
Amy’s transition shows that a career in nuclear really can start from anywhere, and you don’t have to be an engineer or come from a STEM background. The opportunities available at Babcock give you a role with purpose, delivering critical programmes and helping to create a safe and secure world, together.
“Nuclear is an incredibly exciting sector to work in, and the work itself feels really meaningful. Even if you're from a totally different background, the fresh perspectives you'll bring from other industries will absolutely be one of your biggest strengths.”
